Girls* on Ice Canada Expeditions

Girls* on Ice Canada’s Illecillewaet Expedition ran in the summer of 2025 and offered a one-of-a-kind Canadian mountain experience combining science, mountaineering, and art. Based out of the Alpine Club of Canada’s Asulkan Hut, participants explored the Asulkan Glacier and surrounding alpine terrain while engaging in immersive lessons both on and off the ice. Youth participants from across Canada were supported by a team of certified mountain guides, professional scientists, and artists. The glacier environment served as a living classroom—perfect for developing scientific observation skills, deepening ecological understanding of the relationships between organisms and their environments, and fostering personal reflection through artistic expression. The expedition also provided opportunities for participants to build confidence while navigating challenging terrain and to cultivate a lifelong appreciation for the natural world. A special highlight included an International Year of Glacier Preservation evening event, where the girls* learned more about glacier conservation efforts across Canada.
