Changing Cryospheres- Call For Art
In recognition of the UN International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation (IYGP; 2025-2026) and Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025-2034), the Virtual Water Gallery and Canada IYGP have opened an online gallery to exhibit art that explores the inspiration, imagination, (lived) reality, and values connected to glaciers, mountains, snow, and ice - including the changes and impacts unfolding across these shifting landscapes.

Banff Mountain Book and Film Festival: Fire and Ice Symposium
When: November 4-5th, 2025
The Banff Centre describes the Fire an Ice Symposium as public symposium exploring the role of storytelling to create positive impact and action, through the lens of changing ice and wildfire. Where attendees will gain new knowledge about the landscapes we care about, be inspired by seeing the work that people are doing in the space to create a better future, and gain insights into compelling storytelling, leaving with an optimism/drive to make a positive impact. Listen, interact and exchange stories with educators, artists, writers, scientists, environmental experts, and adventurers on topics that affect us all.

Author Talk With Lynn Martel: Stories of Ice
Lynn Martel will be sharing tales and spectacular photography from Stories of Ice: Adventure, Commerce and Creativity on Canada’s Glaciers at the BAG in Squamish. Her book chronicles the glacial exploits of a collection of fascinating individuals—explorers, professional guides, tourism operators, scientists, artists, filmmakers—and in the process, weaves together the rich history of Western Canada’s glaciers.

Sam Baardman: Icefields on the Edge
Throughout April, Sam Baardman will present Icefields on the Edge at a local restaurant as part of Winnipeg’s Flash Photographic Festival. This exhibition captures the beauty and vulnerability of icefields in a warming world. On April 13th, Sam will give a talk on the Glacier Year and perform a selection of eco-songs.
Day of the Glacier paintings by Georgina Perkins Hunt Opening Night
Day of the Glacier, opening March 21, 2025, is an upcoming exhibition by Georgina Perkins Hunt, at the Willock & Sax Gallery in Banff. This collection focuses on the glaciers of this region and aligns with the United Nations’ designation of 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation.
Launch of the 1st World Day for Glaciers and World Water Day
For the celebration of the first World Day for Glaciers and the pivot event of the World Water Day, a high-level event will take place on 21 March 2025 in the UN Headquarters in New York. The 2025 global campaign for the World Day for Glaciers and World Water Day, will highlight the various impacts of glacier changes on downstream communities and ecosystems, and the need for developing water-related adaptation strategies.

The Interpretive Guides Association is putting on a one-day Canadian Rockies Glacier Stories Workshop, hosted by Lynn Martel, author of Stories of Ice: Adventure, Commerce and Creativity on Canada’s Glaciers. With visits to Peyto Lake, Bow Lake, and Lake Louise, you’ll learn about our glaciers - the beautiful, fascinating, intriguing, precious places where people pursue adventures, work, run businesses, conduct scientific studies, and create art, all year round.
